Help! My Vacuum Cleaner Won't Work.
Firstly, check if the power is on in your house (you’ll be surprised how often the power trips)
If the cable is plugged into the socket grab the cord about a foot away from the 3 pin plug and gently flex the cable, be careful of any sparks that come out of the plug area. In the case of cord rewind reels, carefully pull the cable all of the way out and flex the cable along its length. If there are sparks contact us immediately!
Will something else work in that power-point? If so then the problem doesn’t lie there.
Is the vacuum hot? Check for any blockages in the nozzle, pipe, hose, and especially in the bent tube which is the most constricting element of the vacuum cleaner. Drop a socket, marble or a $2 coin through the hose to ensure there’s no obstruction. If you can’t retrieve the object then contact us as the tubes are blocked.
Check to make sure that all of the filters are not blocked. Clean the filters. If you have domestic vacuum cleaner with a non hazardous H.E.P.A. filters test to see if it is clogged by banging it gently with the dirty side down over a sheet of paper, replace if it is clogged.
On the Nilfisk Extreme, Kings and Compact H.E.P.A. Main the filters are underneath the machine, between the wheels and N-A recommend they should be replaced each year. GM 200,300,400 filters should be replaced every couple of years.
However, this is simply a guide and they may need to be done more frequently in dusty situations, i.e. living in country locations, where building work is taking place, or when there are old carpets dust built up, or in a situation where an old machine has previously been used in the home, and now a new, more powerful machine with very efficient filtration system has been bought and used on the carpets, pulling up years of dust from the underlay.
Is the paper dust-bag “sheeting” covered with fine dust? If so this means that a concentrated patch on the paper bag blocking the air is created thus causing a lack of suction and the machine will heat up triggering the thermal switch and cause the unit to be turned off. This can be alleviated by reducing the suction level after knocking the dust from where it adheres to the vacuum bag. You may also try putting screwed up tissues or kitchen roll in the dust bag, which in cyclonic machines may mix with the fine dust and reduce the sheeting effect.
Leave the small units to cool down for up to 2 hours, 10 mins on the GM 200,300,400, GM King and Compact with the front cover open. Then try the machine again.
Sometimes it is helpful to reread the instruction booklet for tips and tricks.
If all else fails please bring your machine to our workshop/office at 257B, Great Eastern Highway, Burswood, W.A 6100 Ph. 08 9362 6044.
Please note that there is a $36.30 unaccepted quote charge if the machine has been used in any other means other than in accordance with instructions found in the Nilfisk-Advance instruction booklet. The charge also stands if the customer decides not to go ahead with the repair.
